Ira Watkins Opening Reception

The Bayview Opera House is proud to present a collection of Ira Watkins’ works. Ira has been a Bay Area resident since 1957. He is a self-taught artist whose work depicts motifs of liberation, art, success and celebrates the African-American community in the Bay Area that migrated from the South during WWII to find jobs in the shipyards.A 2015 New York Times piece opened with Mr. Watkins’ story as one of the “hidden gems” of the Tenderloin recognized by the Wildflowers Institute. Please join us on July 19th to celebrate the art of Ira and recognize this prolific community treasure.
